Benefits of using Biochar
Think of biochar like a sponge.
A highly porous structure that is able to absorb four times its weight in water & nutrients.
How to make Biochar
1. Fill the small drum with organic waste, (biomass). The biomass needs to be very light & dry. Cut large pieces of biomass to equal sizes.
The biomass inside the small drum turns to biochar.
2. Place the small drum into the large drum.
3. Fill the empty space between the two drums with long branches of biomass.
It is this biomass which is going to be set on fire. The fire from the large drum is going to cook the biomass in the small drum, turning it to biochar.
Top Tip: Don't fill the space too tightly.
4. Form a kindling pile on top of the drum & set fire to it. Nurture the fire to light the biomass around the edges.
Top tip: The fire starts on the top and burns downwards, towards the bottom air holes.
5. Place the chimney on top, sealing off the fire, creating an updraft. A successful burn will emit a clear vapour called wood gas.
Top tip: If white smoke comes out of the chimney this means the fire is not hot enough to sustain the burn process. Remove the chimney and feed the fire with more kindling.
6. Burn time: 1 Hour
Cooling time: 1-2 Hours
Burn Temperature: 400 - 600 degrees.
Top tip: The burn is a self regulating process.
